Police officials say Chinese nationals studying in the US, UK, Australia and Japan are being targeted by 'cyber kidnappers' whose parents pay huge ransoms. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has warned its citizens in the US, especially students, to beware of 'virtual kidnapping' and similar scams. The statement came after 17-year-old missing Chinese student Kai Zhuang was recovered on December 31. They were recovered from a site of makeshift tents in the wilds of the US state of Utah. Kai's parents told school officials that they had been demanded a ransom and had been sent a photo of their son hinting at his abduction. According to the police, cyber-kidnapping victims isolate themselves out of panic, even taking pictures of themselves that make it look like they have been kidnapped.
